How To Choose The Best CBD

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

You’ve read dozens of articles on the potential health benefits of CBD. You’ve skimmed through countless reviews from ecstatic customers. You’ve browsed quite a few fancy websites.

And hey, how could you not?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the hottest topics in the health & wellness niche right now, so it’s just natural to be curious about it.

Perhaps, you’ve considered trying it out—or even started taking it recently!

But there’s one thing that’s bothering you quite a bit, and you need a solid answer.

How can you be sure that your purchase is the real deal? Is there a way to protect yourself from fake or low-quality products?

Here are 7 solid ways to make sure your CBD product is worth trying out.

1: Check the product’s potency

The idea is simple: the higher the dose in a given CBD product, the higher its price should be. High-potency oils, tinctures, and capsules are usually quite expensive, but that’s just natural because you’ll be getting more of the desired compound.

If you see a website selling a super-potent CBD tincture for $9.99—it should come as a no-brainer that the only ”CBD” you’ll be getting is the abbreviation printed on the label.

2: See what’s the extraction method

CBD can be extracted from hemp in many different ways. Of course, some of them are more effective (and safer) than other approaches.

  • CO2 extraction consists of using pressured carbon dioxide to pull out the CBD from hemp. It’s safe, effective, and allows getting CBD products with outstanding purity
  • Extraction using olive oil is practiced mostly by amateurs, as it’s an easy DIY method. Basically, it consists of heating hemp in olive oil to a certain temperature for several hours. Although easy, this method yields low-potency blends.
  • Dry ice extraction is another popular approach among DIY enthusiasts, and it’s potentially superior to olive oil extraction. On the other hand, it requires quite a bit of skill to be performed the right way. Otherwise, the product will be ruined completely, so this is a hit-or-miss kind of thing.
  • Solvent extraction consists of using chemical solvents like ethanol or butane to extract the CBD. The main danger is that these solvents are highly flammable and may yield a product high in contaminants.

The safest and most effective way of extracting CBD from hemp is using carbon dioxide as a solvent (CO2 extraction). Opt for this kind of CBD products whenever possible.

3: Choose between full spectrum extracts vs CBD isolate

Cannabidiol isn’t the only beneficial substance in cannabis.

This plant contains over a hundred of other cannabinoids, various terpenes, flavonoids, and a whole bunch of other phytochemicals. Each of these compounds comes with its own effects, of course.

Full spectrum extracts contain both CBD and the vast array of other cannabis compounds (besides the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol, THC). Studies indicate that many of the phytochemicals in the cannabis plant work synergistically, as if magnifying each other’s action. This is often referred to as the ”entourage effect” and is currently being studied in different trials.

CBD isolates, on the other hand, contain just CBD. As a result, most customers report milder and gentler results from this type of product, most likely because there’s no entourage effect involved.

If you’re looking for a more potent product, full spectrum or broad spectrum extracts are preferred.

4: Make sure the THC level is within legal limits

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis. THC causes the distinctive ”high” that recreational marijuana users seek, contrary to CBD that doesn’t have any mind-altering effects (and even counteracts the effects of THC).

When choosing a CBD product, make sure it has no more than 0.3% of THC, as this is the legal limit in most states. Products with a higher THC content are legal only in those states where marijuana has been legalized both for medicinal and recreational use.

As of March 2019, these states are Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.

Opting for a product with higher THC content may lead to psychoactive effects and could make your experience with CBD blurred at the very least.

5: Don’t get fooled by cheap products

The process of CBD extraction is very expensive. The equipment needed to perform CO2 extraction can cost about $39,000 or even more, so it’s just natural that sellers will be setting a higher price for such products to get their investment back as soon as possible.

In other words, cheap products are probably fake, low-quality, or not manufactured in the optimal way.

6: Check the manufacturer’s background and reputation

Hundreds of manufacturers are jumping on the CBD bandwagon every month, determined to seize their share of the market. For you as a customer, this means you’ll have to carefully analyze whatever information you can dig up on a company before purchasing their product.

7: Watch out for additives

Although watermelon-flavored CBD gummy bears may sound like something you’d like to try (I mean, who wouldn’t?), CBD products with additives are usually inferior to their ”boring” alternatives. It’s impossible to predict how a certain food dye, coloring, or any other substance will affect cannabidiol, so it’s recommended to go with high-purity products.

Also, be aware that some manufacturers could try to hide the sub-standard quality of their products under multiple layers of additives, so that’s always a risk.

If your goal is a clean and straightforward CBD experience, choose simple and understandable products. They may lack that WOW-effect, but they generally work better than the fancy stuff.
